Chelsea are keeping tabs on Brazilian midfield star Bernard, according to The Sun.The 20-year-old, dubbed the new Oscar, is said to be valued at £6m by his club Atletico Mineiro and is apparently being touted as a possible successor to Frank Lampard. The Daily Mirror say Chelsea are still chasing Bayer Leverkusen striker Andre Schurrle.QPR boss Harry Redknapp plans to approach his former club Tottenham to see if they are willing to sell Scott Parker, the Mirror say.The England midfielder has not played since the European Championship but is one of a host of players Redknapp is said to be keen to sign. The Mirror also say Rob Green is likely to become Redknapp’s number one keeper and that Rangers are vying with Liverpool and Fulham for the signing of Aston Villa striker Darren Bent. The Guardian and the Daily Express also suggest Redknapp is keen on Bent – another player he managed at Spurs. The Daily Mail say Redknapp’s recent appointment could lead to an exodus of highly-paid players, but they are determined not to be forced out of the club by him.It is suggested that Esteban Granero, Julio Cesar, Jose Bosingwa and Ji-sung Park are among those who could be sold. And The Scotsman report that Joe Jordan is out of the running for the Scotland manager’s job as he is working alongside Redknapp at Loftus Road. This page is regularly updated.YTo4OntzOjk6IndpZGdldF9pZCI7czoyMDoid3lzaWphLW5sLTEzNTI0NjE4NjkiO3M6NToibGlzdHMiO2E6MTp7aTowO3M6MToiMyI7fXM6MTA6Imxpc3RzX25hbWUiO2E6MTp7aTozO3M6MjI6Ildlc3QgTG9uZG9uIFNwb3J0IGxpc3QiO31zOjEyOiJhdXRvcmVnaXN0ZXIiO3M6MTc6Im5vdF9hdXRvX3JlZ2lzdGVyIjtzOjEyOiJsYWJlbHN3aXRoaW4iO3M6MTM6ImxhYmVsc193aXRoaW4iO3M6Njoic3VibWl0IjtzOjMzOiJTdWJzY3JpYmUgdG8gb3VyIGRhaWx5IG5ld3NsZXR0ZXIiO3M6Nzoic3VjY2VzcyI7czoyODM6IlRoYW5rIHlvdSEgUGxlYXNlIGNoZWNrIHlvdXIgaW5ib3ggaW4gb3JkZXIgdG8gY29uZmlybSB5b3VyIHN1YnNjcmlwdGlvbi4gSWYgeW91IGRvbid0IHNlZSBhbiBlLW1haWwgZnJvbSB1cywgY2hlY2sgeW91ciBzcGFtIGZvbGRlci4gSWYgeW91IHN0aWxsIGhhdmVuJ3QgcmVjZWl2ZWQgYSBjb25maXJtYXRpb24gbWVzc2FnZSwgcGxlYXNlIGUtbWFpbCBmZWVkYmFja0B3ZXN0bG9uZG9uc3BvcnQuY29tIGFuZCB0ZWxsIHVzIHlvdSB3aXNoIHRvIHN1YnNjcmliZSB0byBvdXIgbmV3c2xldHRlci4iO3M6MTI6ImN1c3RvbWZpZWxkcyI7YToxOntzOjU6ImVtYWlsIjthOjE6e3M6NToibGFiZWwiO3M6NToiRW1haWwiO319fQ== Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebook
19 March 2013 South African scientists, engineers, companies and institutions stand to benefit from the invitation for international consortia to bid for early-stage work on the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), an international effort to build the world’s largest radio telescope, which will be co-hosted by South Africa and Australia. Last week, the International SKA Organisation issued an invitation for international consortia to bid for work packages in the pre-construction phase of the SKA, involving the design of the telescope architecture and sub-systems, including components such as antennas, receivers, signal processing systems, data transport and high performance computers. The overall aim of this phase, which is expected to run through to the end of 2016, is to deliver detailed designs and blueprints for the SKA facility to go out to tender for construction. SKA South Africa said in a statement on Friday that it was positioned to play a “prominent role” in responding to this request, both because of the expertise contained in the SKA South Africa project team, and because of the involvement of South African industry in the development and delivery of the SKA prototype MeerKAT telescope. “The MeerKAT engineering team and local industries have been in discussions with their international peers to form consortia that will respond to the request for proposals.” SKA South Africa held an information session for local industry in February, and was now in the process of finalising a subsidy programme aimed at helping local companies and institutions to take part in the SKA pre-construction phase “on a shared risk basis, in order to develop the expertise, competency and know-how to be internationally competitive in bidding for SKA contracts when the telescope is built”. Potential industry and institutional participants were encouraged to keep a check on www.ska.ac.za for information on the requests for proposals and related information. SAinfo reporter
Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The Trump administration announced it would pursue closer trade relations with the United Kingdom.Meeting last week at the White House, President Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May agreed to hold preliminary talks on a trade deal, which can’t be finalized until the U.K. leaves the European Union. (The U.K. in June 2016 voted to get out of the economic bloc, which was formed after World War II to promote economic growth and to avoid conflict among the 28 member countries.)Trump and May agreed to set up a working groups to consider ways to improve trade between the countries before the United Kingdom, which consists of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, exits the EU. The so-called Brexit process may take up to two years. At a Friday press conference with the president, May said the countries will work to “lay the groundwork for a U.K.-U.S. trade agreement and identify the practical steps we can take now in order to enable companies in both countries to trade and do business with one another more easily.”Given its desire to negotiate a free trade agreement with the U.K., it is unclear if the Trump administration will continue trade talks with the EU through the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. Those negotiations have been limping along nearly since the TTIP was initiated in 2013.The trade talks with the U.K. was news welcomed by the National Pork Producers Council. Although NPPC had been supportive of the TTIP, it was skeptical that U.S. farmers would get a good deal out of the agreement given the EU’s intransigence on eliminating tariff and non-tariff barriers on agricultural products, including pork.“We applaud the Trump administration for recognizing the importance of free trade agreements to American agriculture and the entire U.S. economy,” said John Weber, NPPC president. “We’re pleased that it will work for a stronger trade relationship with the United Kingdom through a mutually beneficial trade agreement.“In pursuing better trade with the U.K. and working toward a free trade agreement with it, I think the administration recognized that TTIP isn’t going anywhere,” Weber said. “We’re pleased President Trump is instead focusing on bolstering our historic ties with the U.K.”
A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… If we correlate O’Reilly’s comments with Meeker’s, it may not be until 2011 that we see a new era of the Web. In other words, what we’re seeing in 2009 is the beginning of a recovery – but it will take a couple more years until the full impact is seen. That makes sense if we view mobile as the key driver of the next Web era, because mobile certainly is very young in its growth curve in the U.S. (it’s more mature of course in Asia and Europe). Yesterday we wrote about Mary Meeker’s annual overview of Internet trends at the Web 2.0 Summit. In this post we do a deeper dive into the Web themes that Meeker explored. In particular we’ll analyze mobile social networking, compare 2009 to previous years and look at the impact of Apple and Facebook on current trends. You can also skip to the conclusion for the main points.Meeker’s presentation noted that financial markets have rebounded and that the technology sector is now “relatively impressive.” Let’s start by explaining how 2009 is different to previous years.2001 ReduxTim O’Reilly noted yesterday in his conference opening that the “[Web] revolution we’re seeing today is as great as the one we saw five years ago.” Mary Meeker had an interesting slide that touched on a similar point – although the dates don’t quite match. O’Reilly compared 2009 to 2004. Meeker pointed to statistics showing that growth in the technology sector in 2009 has the same pattern as 2001. In slide 40, Meeker wrote:“Mobile devices will evolve as remote controls for ever expanding types of real-time cloud-based services, including emerging category of location-based services, creating opportunities + dislocations, empowering consumers in unprecedented + transformative ways.”Apple Leading the ChargeIn slide 39, Meeker wrote that Apple is the leading hardware and software company currently in the mobile Internet market:“Near term, Apple is driving the platform change to mobile computing. Its mobile ecosystem (iPhone + iTouch + iTunes + accessories + services) market share / impact should surprise on upside for at least the next 1-2 years.Long term, emerging markets competition, open mobile web (paced by likes of Google Android) and carrier limitations pose challenges. RIM likely to maintain enterprise lead for 1-2 years owing to installed base.”In the next slide, Meeker claimed that the iphone/itouch ecosystem exhibited the “fastest hardware user growth in consumer tech history.”The Growth of Facebook, YouTube & TwitterWe all know that these three services have experienced large growth over the past few years. Slide 42 summarizes that. richard macmanus Tags:#Analysis#conferences#Features#NYT#Trends#web#Web 2.0 Summit 2009 Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Related Posts Mobile Social NetworkingOne of the points on slide 2 is that platforms that combine social networking with mobile will drive “unprecedented change in communications + commerce.” That statement seems a little hyperbolic, but we have undeniably seen an uptick in usage this year of companies like Foursquare, Loopt and Brightkite. Later in the presentation, Meeker predicted that Facebook will be a major player in this market in the near future. We reported back in March that Foursquare was one of the highlights of the SXSW Interactive event in Austin, Texas. This is the same event where Twitter first generated buzz back in 2007. While it’s too early to call Foursquare the ‘Twitter of mobile social networking,’ it’s worth keeping an eye on that app in particular – given Meeker’s prediction.Later in slide 36, Meeker noted the importance of location-based services.Device ExplosionAnother key point in Meeker’s presentation was that Internet connected devices will proliferate over the coming years. Also note the emergence of Demand Media, which we reviewed earlier this year. We met with Demand Media again yesterday, so a new analysis post is coming soon on this fascinating new media company.ConclusionOverall, we at ReadWriteWeb agree with Morgan Stanley that mobile is going to continue to ramp up considerably. However we think that other trends – such as Internet of Things and real-time Web – were overlooked by Meeker. You can continue to track those and other emerging Internet trends here on our blog. Also, while we agree that mobile social networking will be a big trend, we think it’s likely that a brand new service will emerge as a major winner in that field. So Facebook may not be the major player, as Morgan Stanley implies in its report. Foursquare may be the big winner, or it could be something completely new. Twitter came out of left field a couple of years ago and it’s now a dominant topic of conversation at the Web 2.0 Summit. What New Thing will we be talking about in 2 years time? Let us know in the comments!Lead photo: O’Reilly Conferences
A few additional thoughts about natural, eco-friendly fabrics to take into consideration:To dye or not to dyeBest practice is using natural, undyed fabrics, but who wants to live in a world without color? Look for natural dyes without the use of heavy metal dyes. Another eco-friendly option is a closed-loop system that used low-impact reactive dyes. BleachingRather than using chlorine bleach, which is a toxic pollutant, look for “next-to-skin” comfort from oxidizing chemicals such as ozone or hydrogen peroxide, which break down into oxygen and water.Fire retardantsWork with companies that restrict the use of flame retardants, man-made chemicals made from polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). PBDEs are often added to foam padding, plastics, or fabrics so that they won’t catch on fire or burn as easily when exposed to flame or high heat. They do not break down quickly, and remain in the environment for an indefinite period. If flame retardants are necessary, specify that they be free of hazardous chemicals.Fabric finishingFor quick reference, here’s a short list of sustainable characteristics for sourcing natural fiber materials:Made from rapidly renewable and sustainable resourcesMade with minimal ecological footprint; land, energy, water, resources, waste, etc.Minimal processing toward end productMade with non-toxic chemicalsMade with a closed loop cycleReusable, recyclable and biodegradableCertified by Organic Trade Association (OTA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (iFOAM), SKAL, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), etc.I love supporting textile industry eco-preneurs— O Ecotextiles, Q-Collection, Foxfibre Colorganic, Organic Plus and F. Schumacher & Co.—who create beautiful and eco-friendly materials that are nontoxic, sustainable and ethical. O Ecotextiles, for example, uses finishes made of beeswax, aloe vera, and vitamin A—what a great role model!Enjoy exploring the wide variety of natural fibers that meet the environmental characteristics outlined above and help to restore a natural balance inside our homes and on our planet! And if you know of any great sources, please share them with us!
